In 1949, Peg Kehret is a typical twelve-year-old girl sitting in class but thinking about the Homecoming parade that afternoon. Suddenly, she gets a painful leg spasm, which is only the first of many. She wakes up to find that she is unable to move from the neck down. Diagnosed with polio, she learns she is the only person in her town to contract the debilitating disease. Sent away from her friends and family to recover in a special hospital, she befriends her fellow polio patients and recounts their progress and setbacks. Using fictionalized dialog, Kehret vividly recreates her frightening ordeal.
